Proxide vs Helicone
Helicone is a great observability tool — it tells you what happened after the fact. Proxide is an active gateway that intervenes in real-time: blocking over-budget requests, stripping PII before it reaches any model, and recovering automatically when providers fail.
Helicone: Observability
Helicone sits in the request path and records everything that flows through it. You get dashboards, latency metrics, cost breakdowns, and prompt versioning. It's excellent for understanding what your application is doing.
The limitation: Helicone cannot stop anything from happening. When a client exceeds its budget, Helicone can alert you — but the requests keep going through. When a user types their SSN in a prompt, Helicone logs it. It records events; it doesn't control them.
Proxide: Active Gateway
Proxide actively controls every request. Before a prompt is forwarded to any model, Proxide checks the client's budget, redacts any detected PII, scans for semantic cache hits, and checks if the request looks like a loop.
If a client is over budget, the request is blocked — not logged and allowed through. If a prompt contains a credit card number, it's redacted before it ever leaves your infrastructure. If OpenAI returns a 429, Proxide retries against Anthropic before your client sees any error.

Budget enforcement that actually blocks
Helicone can alert you when spend is high. Proxide stops the requests when a client crosses its limit — returning a 402 response your app can handle gracefully, before your bill gets out of hand.
PII redaction before the model sees it
Helicone logs raw prompts — including any PII your users include. Proxide strips emails, credit cards, SSNs, NI numbers, and phone numbers before forwarding. The model never sees sensitive data.
Automatic failover with 20+ providers
When OpenAI hits a 429 or goes down, Proxide automatically routes to your configured fallback (Anthropic, Groq, DeepSeek, etc.) without your client seeing an error. Helicone has no failover capability.
Semantic caching cuts costs 20–40%
Proxide caches LLM responses by semantic meaning, not exact text match. Identical questions phrased differently all hit the cache. Helicone has no caching.
